In the isolated, mountainous eastern region of Ghana people mainly rely on streams, rivers and other unsafe sources of water, all high risk for disease given the practice of open defecation and poor hygiene close by. This project focuses on safe, hand-dug wells where water is either lifted using a rope pump or a Nira handpump and the construction of Ventilated Improved Pit latrines. WaterAid will fund the rest of this $111,000 project. The local partner uses community interaction to enhance behaviour change regarding safety of drinking water, hand washing and safe excretion disposal.
