It doesn’t take much to boost morale. A dozen home-baked cookies will do the trick.

Today our team ran into Los Angeles County, making our way through the ritzy coastal cities of Malibu and Santa Monica, finishing at Manhattan Beach. It felt like LA, with the fancy mansions in the green hills, surfers pulling their boards from their SUVs, and the funky middle-aged woman in full track suit along the road, music blasting in her ears, dancing and singing to herself as she walked.

We had a major exchange point set up along the 3rd street promenade in Santa Monica, which was well attended. We engaged passersby with stickers and smiles, although their attention was a bit tougher to get than in most places we’ve been, since locals are bombarded year-round with special events and activities. However, at one point during our presentation on stage, we were surprised by a true BPR supporter. After yelling out an answer to one of our trivia questions to win a free tee-shirt, this woman in the crowd yelled: “I’ve also baked you some cookies.” She brought up the container with a dozen chocolate-chip cookies and we didn’t even wait for Brynn to arrive at the exchange point before starting into the delicious treats.

These small gestures along the way make sure a huge difference in keeping our spirits high! Thank you!

The past two nights we’ve been treated with Pace Runners here in Colorado. It is amazing how energizing it is to have new and enthusiastic faces milling about in running gear at exchange points.

August 7, 2007 - Lake Mead

Today, as our team ran through the Mojave Desert and past Lake Mead, we were all reminded that access to safe drinking water is not just an issue affecting the developing world.

August 3, 2007 - Two fond memories

Today’s route brought us past two locales very important to me: the town of Carmel, where I proposed to Brynn, and Big Sur, where I ran one of my favorite marathons only weeks before the start of BP

July 28, 2007

This is going to be a very short blog.

Today we ran in Beijing.

It was hot.

It was humid.

It was extremely polluted.

There was relentless traffic.
