Water is the First Step
The Keystone to Many Important Issues
Access to safe drinking water opens a world of possibilities.
- Children can go to school
- Women are liberated from the daily burden of fetching water
- Increases the amount of time available for economic activity
- Prevents the migration to overpopulated cities
Access to safe drinking water is the first rung on the ladder out of the pit of poverty.
For more than one billion people at the bottom of the economic pyramid, access to safe drinking water is the first rung on the latter out of the pit of poverty. For these people, access to safe drinking water is the foundation for the issues of health, education, food, livelihood, gender equalization, migration to urban areas, population and environment. Providing access to safe drinking water is the first step to solving these other issues.
Women and girls spend their day gathering water instead of going to school or making an income. Without education and gender equality they have more children. Men migrate to city slums, increasing the burden on urban areas while the economies of their rural villages suffer.
If we are to successfully take on the issues of health, AIDS, poverty, and education, we must start with water. By funding sustainable safe drinking water projects, we can bring about truly amazing and lasting positive change in all of these areas.
