I am a long-distance racing fanatic who follows the sport with as much passion as some others follow more popular sports like soccer and F1.
I am also someone who is socially aware and want to use this platform to raise awareness about social issues. Among them the one that keeps me most concerned is global warming and related environmental issues.
There is an intrinsic link between running and ecological sensitivity. The more polluted our cities and our globe gets, the more adversely affected our abilities to engage in demanding physical activities would be. So, it is important to combine the passion for running with an equal determination to stem the rot of environmental degradation and use marathons and other such events as platforms to raise these issues.
Why I Like Long-Distance Racing So Much?
Among all the sports, long-distance running, especially marathons are the closest to the fans as they give them an opportunity to participate themselves. While sitting at the sofa in your home and watching the hardiest men in the world put on a near-supernatural show of endurance is riveting enough, taking part in the event and getting a taste of the event makes the experience even more exciting.
Unlike other sports, you can easily join the running party and while you may not be able to catch the leading runners, just knowing that you are part of the group led by them is exalting.
Another reason why this sport is special is because it simultaneously sees people with different abilities come together. So, you will see para-athletes, visually-disabled people and those with other limitations braving the heat and the distance to come and take part.
What’s more, people in their 70s and 80s also join in and present an example to all those who aspire to remain young at heart about letting age remain just a number. The marathons also accommodate people with less endurance through shorter races like 10 K and 5 K runs.
So, marathons are a great celebration of human spirit and I believe it deserves much more attention than it presently gets in the media.
